Fiona & Sneh
Welcome
We're so excited to celebrate with you on May 31st and June 1st! We've packed this website with information for guests with questions about our events or traveling from out of town, and we hope it's a useful resource. Please remember to RSVP by April 5, 2024!
May 31
2024
TO 2:00 pm
Gloria Dei Church
916 S Swanson St
Philadelphia, PA 19125
Semi-Formal requested- if you'd wear it to a family holiday or a religious service it's probably great!
We've arranged a shuttle from Loews Hotel to the church. Please note all provided transportation will leave from Loews, which is about a 5 minute walk from the Aloft. Both hotels have reserved blocks available in the Philadelphia tab above.
Gloria Dei (Old Swedes’) Church has a lot of rich Philadelphian history. The church is the oldest surviving brick building in Philadelphia, the oldest congregation in continuous existence in the United State, and in 1777, Betsy Ross was married here! The grounds are in partnership with the National Park Service and recognized as a Historic Site.
May 31
2024
TO 10:00 pm
Loews Philadelphia
1200 Market Street
Millennium Ballroom
Philadelphia, PA 19125
A Sangeet or Garba is a pre-wedding event that primarily revolves around dinner and coordinated dancing. There isn't a religious aspect to this function, it's just a party! We will have friends and family performances, and some traditional folks dances you can learn on the fly, like Garba and Dandiya Raas. Bold colors, bright jewelry and ease of movement should guide your outfit planning.
Traditional Indian Fashions are welcome and encouraged! We've assembled some tips in the Indian Wedding Guide, if this will be your first Sangeet, but if you're more comfortable in Western-wear then colorful cocktail to semi-formal attire is the best parallel.
Jun 1
2024
TO 9:45 am
Loews Philadelphia
For Sneh's baraat, the groom's side will gather at a designated location to parade through the streets of Philadelphia while Sneh is on a horse. For obvious reasons, if you're not related to Fiona you should feel free to consider yourself "groom's side" for this event- we wouldn't want you to miss out!
Jun 1
2024
TO 11:00 am
Loews Philadelphia
1200 Market Street
Philadelphia, PA 19125
United States
Our ceremony will last around 60 minutes, but the audience experience is more casual than many Western wedding experiences. The pandit (or priest) will explain the ceremony as he goes for our English-speaking attendees, but it is mostly conducted in Sanskrit.
Traditional Indian Fashions are welcome and encouraged! If you're more comfortable in Western-wear then colorful cocktail to formal attire is the best parallel. Those attending the baraat should consider the weather!
Jun 1
2024
TO 10:00 pm
Bartram's Garden
5400 Lindbergh Blvd
Philadelphia, PA 19125
United States
We'd love to see you bring your best! Consider the dress code black tie encouraged. Bartram's Garden is a historic, natural venue with views of downtown across the Schuylkill River, and a tented hardwood pavilion for dinner and dancing. Cocktail hour will consist of some grassy areas and gravel paths, so please choose your shoes accordingly.
Amtrak's 30th Street Station
If you're joining us from the East coast, Philly is a quick and easy Amtrak ride. After arriving at 30th Street Station, you'll be a <10 minute cab ride from Center City and the Loews Hotel.
Philadelphia International Airport
Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is about a 20 minute cab ride from our hotel blocks. In general we recommend this over renting a car if you plan to stay in the city- we'll provide transportation where necessary, and parking downtown can be difficult.
Transportation During Wedding Weekend
We're providing shuttles to both off-site events, and Lyft and Uber are widely available in Philadelphia. If you're driving into town, parking is available at all locations, but there is a daily fee for parking at Loews Hotel.
Aloft Philadelphia
The Aloft Philadelphia is mere moments from the Loews, the venue for two of our events. The booking link for this block is below, and the block is available beginning Thursday, May 30th. Please note shuttles to the reception and western ceremony will leave from Loews, which is about a 5 minute walk from the Aloft.
Loews Hotel
As the location of several of the weekend's events, we expect many of our guests will want to stay on-site. You can reserve a room via the link below or call 888-575-6397 to book with one of Loews wonderful Travel Planners. The block rate is available beginning Thursday, May 30 for those coming in out of town. Please book your rooms by Friday, May 3, 2024 to take advantage of the room block.
What should we expect the weather to be like?
Listen, not even meteorologists can predict the weather. However, late May and early June are fairly moderate in Philadelphia, with average temperatures of mid 60s to mid 70s. We're hoping for comfortable temperatures for our outdoor cocktail hour, though all our other events will be held indoors.
Can we meet up if I'm getting into town early?
If you happen to be in town early, to explore Philadelphia or visit other denizens, please reach out! There will be informal opportunities to see us and meet other guests throughout the week. There is no pressure to do so, however, and we'll be thrilled to see everyone else Friday.
Explore Philadelphia
We'll keep you pretty busy but there's plenty to do in Philadelphia!
The outfit options traditionally available to women vary more than those for men, but all tend to be colorful and elaborate, with patterns or embroidery or beading being common and jewelry almost perfunctory. This is no place for Coco Chanel and her "take one thing off" guidance! If you're shopping online, it's very common for them to be made-to-measure or come partially stitched; obviously this can impact timelines so we recommend starting early! Here are some key phrases to get your search started:
- Lehenga Cholis: Generally a crop top (choli), full skirt (lehenga) and draped scarf (dupatta)- easy to find at many price points, appropriate for most events, can range from casual to very formal, this is one of the most common choices.
- Pre-Draped Sari: No pleating necessary! Pre-Draped sarees are an easy way to get a more formal look without many safety pins (and at least one talented auntie).
- Anarkali: Essentially a dress with coordinating leggings- great option for anyone looking for more full coverage than lehengas provide, also available in a huge range of styles and levels of formality/detail.
- Kurta: Tunic-length top worn across genders, usually paired with churidar, leggings, slim-fit trousers for men, or palazzo, sharara, or skinny pants for women. When googling examples, keep in mind these terms can be gendered- they're often referred to as "kurta pyjama" for men and "kurta set" for women.
- Sherwani: equivalent to a western suit jacket but with a hem that falls to the knees, worn over a kurta or tee. Kurtas alone can have embroidery and collars and be intended to be worn alone, but they can also be quite thin and plain and essentially function as undershirts for sherwanis.
The typical indicators of western formality- dress length and suit style- aren't really applicable here. Instead you can use the kind of fabric, jewelry, color, and level of detail like embroidery, beading, and sparkle, to differentiate one event from another. Sangeet outfits tend to be loud, shiny, boldly colored and made for easy dancing. The Hindu ceremony is formal but typically less flashy.
Bangles, jhumkas, necklaces, hair pieces- your jewelry doesn't have to be South Asian but it should be present! Even if you opt for Western-wear, a few carefully coordinated bangles can help you get garba-ready with the best of them.
You don't need to buy whole new outfits to join in the festivities. First, you should feel free to rock your favorite brightly-colored Western-wear; you're perfect just the way you are! But if you want to nod to the nature of the event at the Sangeet or Hindu ceremony, fusion-wear is very much en vogue and can be fun to put together. This pic is actually of a set I got from Lulus with a dupatta I purchased separately. You can easily do the same with any dress or maxi skirt outfit, or try a new kurta top but pair it with slim-fit pants you already own. I recommend exploring some of the outfit options outlined below and then consider where you could sub in pieces you already own.
If you prefer an in-person shopping experience, and you live in NYC, Chicago, or North Jersey, the options are plentiful! If you're okay shopping online, here are some sites to try:
- For Rentals: Rent an Attire, Borrow the Bazaar, Bollywood Borrowed, Preserve, and I have periodically seen some lehengas show up in Rent the Runway
- For Purchase (wide price ranges, resale, or good sale selections): Loved Lehenga, Pernia's Pop Up, Panash India, Aza Fashions, Hatkay, House of Indya
- Familiar faces: Some people have had great luck with Etsy, and there are some options on ASOS and Nordstroms if you catch a good sale or are more comfortable with familiar sizing guides
- Remember that fusion fits are always an option!
We absolutely trust you all to be respectful and have good intentions, so please feel free to lean into the cultural aspects of this celebration. You are being invited to try new styles of clothing, you will be invited to don mehndi (henna) and try to garba, we would love for everyone to learn and try new things as we bring our many-faceted communities together. While there are some contentious elements to Western adoption of South Asian fashion (think: what's deemed "festival wear", yoga-as-fitness culture or casual bindi-wearing), in general, if it's mentioned in this guide, it's totally fair game! As always, definitely feel free to reach out if you have any specific questions.
